If the shady portion of this talent agency in United Kingdom is that they try to get people to take training classes and do many photo sessions with the Philippines talent agency photographer in an effort to make money off of you, you can still work with them. You simply make it known that you would like to work with the Philippines talent agency, but are not interested in additional photo sessions or classes. If they really want new photos, fine…as long as they let you go and use a photographer of your choice outside of their talent agency. Just ask them to show you a sample of what they are looking for so that you don’t waste your money.
Be sure that you understand the ropes of the business and when possible get everything in writing. If it is a small job, you don’t have to be too concerned, but if you land a large job, ask for a contract. At the very least, ask the agent to fax you all of the particulars like the client, type of job, date, location, whether or not the client is paying for travel, lodging, per diem, etc. This way if you need to take the agent to court for non-payment or if the agent tries to pay you less, you can always refer to the fax if they say you misunderstood the payment they quoted you.
